Coming off of a great homecoming win against the the Temple City Rams 23-6, the Spartans were running hot and filled with momentum. The then 1-1 in league Spartans looked ready to roll against the then 0-7 Blair Vikings. It then came to a shock when four Spartan starters were announced as out for the game for personal reasons. On top of those four junior Tyler Breneman, junior Raffi Heirapetian, and senior Daivon Grayson were all out due to injuries. With seven total starters out, the team’s chances for victory were in doubt.
The Spartans dominated the Vikings in a game that ended in a final score of 53-0. The Spartans were in control of every facet of the game whether it was senior David Yoon’s 97 yard touchdown run or the five forced Spartan turnovers.
“We needed this to help our chances for the playoffs and it's good to know that despite all the stuff that this football team has been through we can still come together and win a game,” said senior and team captain Charlie Weiss, whose blocked punt for a touchdown was one of the many highlights of the Spartans’ glorious victory.
Although seven starters were out, the Spartans played well thanks to all of the JV players who stepped up to fill in for the players who were out.
“A lot of guys got to play and a lot of guys that normally don’t get to touch the ball got to touch the ball, and some guys got to score that never got to score before,” said Coach Zerbel. “There were some kids that stepped up and played huge. Julian Martinez started on defense and played well. John Chung also played well. Nick Cozzie just coming in and being the holder, most people don’t realise how valuable a position that is.”
Sophomore Timmy Fejtek also stepped up big, coming from JV with three total tackles to contribute to the win against Blair.
Overall, this was a great win for both the Spartan players and fans alike.
