The 2016-2017 school year has begun, which means the girls’ varsity tennis season is off to a rolling start. After losing a few key seniors following last year’s graduation, the girls are practicing to repeat their impressive overall record, 9-5, and league record, 6-2, from last year. Team captains Grace Rickert (12) and Elizabeth Lee (12) are working especially hard to ensure that this season will be victorious for the team.
“We’re starting off the season by planning a lot of bonding activities. I’m thinking that a pool party and sleepover will be a great opportunity to bring the team closer together and build some team spirit,” said Elizabeth.
Four skilled freshman have also made the Varsity team. Lisa, Elyse, Maya, and Annabelle (will get last names soon) will all be great assets moving forward.
Grace described the freshmen as “really good players”. She added, “I think they’ll make a great addition to the team.”
She also commented on the Varsity coach, Will Moravec.
“He lets us skip practice sometimes, which is nice, and I guess we’re just lucky to have such a chill coach,” she said jokingly.
The team’s first two games were non-conference games, which are preliminary, against Hart and Notre Dame, respectively. Their league games start in the latter half of September, and they will play against their opponents: Monrovia, Temple City, South Pasadena, and Temple City. Grace is looking forward to a fun-filled season but also hopes to stay motivated until the end.
“It doesn’t matter if we win or lose!” she said. “As long as we don’t give up and stay strong, I’m happy.”
