After a close match, the La Cañada Spartan wrestling team lost to San Marino 48-36 on January 15th. The San Marino Titans beat the La Cañada Spartans in the early matches and won eight out of the first ten through pins. The Spartans made a comeback in the later rounds, and heavyweight wrestlers Russell Marki and Lucas Drill both had impressive performances that helped narrow the gap in the score between the two teams. Though the Spartans lost to the Titans, both the team and the coach remain optimistic and are unfazed by their loss.
Spartan Coach Luthey stated in the La Cañada Valley Sun, “It was fun seeing how enthusiastic this team was throughout. We we’re down a lot and we knew we couldn’t win, but that didn’t stop the [junior varsity] guys from getting into it. Our entire team was into that match, cheering until the last weight. I challenged the team to get involved, and they did.”
Jared Garcia, a senior wrestler on the Spartan team, said, “It was a good match and considering that they are ranked 10th in the state, we did pretty well, and made a great comeback in the upper weights.”
The La Cañada Wrestling Team will play in the Rio Hondo Finals this Saturday, so be sure to cheer them on.
