On this year’s Boys’ Varsity Baseball team, senior Mike Fuelling has been doing an extraordinary job of leaving it all out on the field. Fuelling has played in six games, hit two home runs, and has a batting average of .368 and an on base average of .400 this season.
Coach Valadez stated, “Mike has been playing extremely well. He has stepped up offensively for us, and he’s hitting everything hard.”
Fuelling was first introduced to baseball when he was five years old. His dad gave him a glove and a baseball and played catch with him. Throughout his baseball career, he played in several different leagues, including the All-Star team, against players from different states and countries.
Fueling follows a certain routine before every game. He listens to country music on the bus to calm his nerves. Then, once he gets off the bus, he listens to rap music to pump himself up for the game. Last but not least, Fueling runs sprints before the game for his warm up. After these 3 routines, he is ready to give everything on the field.
Commenting on the team’s performance this season, Mike Fuelling stated, “We have not been playing to the best of our ability. We are a really close team this year - better than last year. But this year, we’ve been helping the other team out too much. We make errors on the field that lead to the other team making runs so that it would be hard for us to come back. So if we eliminate the easy errors, we would be a much better team and have a better chance of winning in the league.”
Coach Valadez expressed, “I think [Fueling is] doing everything right. He’s given everything he has on the field and he’s leaving it on the field. Offensively, we couldn’t ask for anything more from him. Defensively, he’s making his plays and playing solid. He’s stepping up and being a leader on the field. In my eyes, I don’t think you tell a player like him how you can improve. It’s more along the lines of keep doing what you are doing.”
