It’s no secret that La Cañada is filled with talent, and at this year’s Welcome Back Assembly, seniors Elias deFaria and Gabby Giancola blessed the ears of our student body by singing a beautiful duet for their Senior Spotlight. Hear about the experience from the duo that had the entire gym standing on their feet cheering by the end of the performance.
1. What song did you guys sing and how did you guys choose it? What made you choose the song?
Elias: We sang “Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. It’s a beautiful song, well known, and the two of us knew a good amount of it already.
Gabby: It’s from the movie “Once.” My dad really likes the movie, so I’d heard it a lot. We were looking for a duet with harmonies and the song happens to have amazing harmonies and a beautiful melody. It was a perfect fit.
2. How did you guys find time to practice?
E: We rehearsed once or twice outside after school by just singing it once. We sang it at the assembly rehearsal and that was pretty much it.
G: Mr. Pugh, the 7/8 choir director, helped us on the Monday before the assembly. Since we already knew the song, it didn’t take a long time to arrange.
3. How did it feel performing in front of the entire student body?
E: It was exhilarating and fun to show my friends and the school my passion.
G: I was super nervous at first to perform in front of so many people, but the crowd was so supportive and great. by the end, I was having a lot of fun.
4. What advice would you give to anyone else considering performing in front of the school?
E: Just be confident and have fun! No matter what happens, people will support you.
G: Have lots of fun and try your best, because it’s probably a one time thing. Don’t worry about people judging you. They’ll be understanding and encouraging!
