Growing up in the greater Los Angeles area has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Being surrounded by the incredibly diverse culture is something that I love, but my favorite thing by far has been the food. This is a guide to some of my favorite dives, cafe’s, shops, and stops in LA, and I hope that you’ll find some time to check them out soon.
Grand Central Market: By far one of the best examples of LA’s diversity, the massive space serves food representing all cultures in Los Angeles, from German currywurst to Thai sticky rice. Mixed in with the food booths are also produce and spice vendors that sell a variety of vegetables, fresh fruits, and even seafood. Every visit to the market brings a new experience. One day I’m sitting right outside waiting for some Texan barbeque from Horse Thief. Another is spent waiting at DTLA Cheese for a Ham Melt, sipping on some juice from Press Brothers Juicery. I’ve never been disappointed by the variety and quality of the food there, and it’s become my favorite place to start my day in LA.
Little Tokyo: The hub of Japanese culture in SoCal, Little Tokyo is the place to go if you’re in the mood for some fantastic ramen, sushi, udon, or just a place to spend time with friends. Finding a spot to eat is never hard. Just decide on a style of food and check the Yelp reviews. For ramen, the best places are Hakata Ramen Shinsengumi, Men Oh Tokushima, Hana Ichimonme, and Daikokuya. Each has it’s own unique style of ramen, Shinsengumi with a Hakata ramen (tonkatsu broth and thin noodles) and Men Oh’s traditional Tokushima ramen (much richer pork broth and thicker noodles). If you’re in the mood for sushi, Komasa and Sushi-gen are both fantastic options even though they might be a little pricier. And after a meal, you can rewind over coffee at Cafe Dulce, sip on boba at OZERO Tea & Desserts, or spend time with friends over the fluffy goodness that is Beard Papa’s.
