Meet Mr. McDermott, La Cañada High School’s newest addition to the math department. He’s excited to be a part of our school.
“I heard great things about the school, students, and teachers. It seemed like a place with a very positive environment where I could enjoy my job,” the math teacher said.
Before Mr. McDermott came to LCHS, he taught at a high school in Connecticut for five years and then two years at a charter school in downtown Los Angeles.
He said, “The school that I worked at in Connecticut is similar to this school in terms of students and size, but I definitely love the work ethic of all the students here- it’s really, really strong.”
During Mr. McDermott’s teaching career, he has taught everything from Algebra 1 to AP Calculus. Currently, he is teaching Algebra 2/Trigonometry and La Cañada Math One.
“The La Canada Math One class is a new class so it’s a little bit different for the students and we’re approaching things differently. [The students] are enthusiastic, working hard, and so far are doing really well. As for my Algebra 2 and Trigonometry classes, we are doing an algebra review, and I can tell that they have a really strong background and are working really hard as well. So, so far so good,” he said.
As for hobbies outside of school, McDermott said, “I’ve played golf since I was a little kid, so I still love to play golf. My wife and I love to travel. After we moved to California a couple of years ago, we went down to San Diego and have been up to San Francisco. We also love to hike and do outdoorsy stuff.”
Overall, Mr. McDermott is a funny and kind teacher, and LCHS is very lucky to have him. If you have time, drop by his room, 224!
