Abel Tesfaye, most commonly known as The Weeknd, is a solo R&B artist discovered on Youtube who has been the talk of the music world lately. His name, “The Weeknd,” came from his experience of running away from home one “weekend” and never going home. His music is more than unique (almost as unique as his hair). I have never heard anything like it. The tone of his voice is the most intriguing part of his music. He sings entirely in falsetto, which displays immense talent, since falsetto is typically difficult for men. He sings about love, girls, parties - everything people want in life. The Weeknd has been compared to artists like Michael Jackson, after the debut of his cover of the famous “Dirty Diana.” It is unreal how alike they sound!
It is refreshing to see someone with actual talent and no auto-tune get praised for his music. He has been collaborating with some of the most renowned artists, including Drake, Ariana Grande, Juicy J, and Wiz Khalifa. Some of his most popular tracks from his latest album, “Trilogy,” are “Wicked Games,” “Twenty Eight,” “Next,” and “The Fall.”
The Weeknd has been getting attention on television; he performed on Saturday Night Live with Ariana Grande in October. Despite this attention, he prefers to stay away from reporters and magazines. He is currently on tour with Schoolboy Q and Jhene Aiko and has sold out almost every venue, which is impressive for someone so new to the industry.
The Weeknd’s natural talent is something that will keep him in the game for a very long time. Check out his music to join the hype.
