Just a few years ago, the only option people had to watch television shows was when they were broadcast at their specified times. However, things all began to change in 2007, when Netflix introduced one of the first video on demand internet streaming programs. For just $7.99 a month, people have the ability to watch their favorite television programs and movies, anytime, anywhere. While many other companies have tried to create similar streaming programs, such as Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, and HBO Go, nothing can compete with Netflix.
Senior Allison Salter loves how “it automatically plays the next episode in a season after fifteen seconds; it takes some serious willpower to stop.”
There are thousands of movies available to stream on Netflix, but more often, teenagers seem to be binge watching television shows. A binge, by definition, is a short period of time devoted to indulging in an activity in excess.
Additionally, Senior Keilee Bessho stated, “I like watching shows on netflix because I don’t have to wait between episodes so I can watch all night long.”
Having to wait a week or even a three month long hiatus between episodes of a TV show on normal television can be annoying to viewers. They lose interest and have a hard time remembering details from episode to episode. Netflix streaming gives people the ability to watch as many episodes at a time as they want. This way they get more invested in the characters and storylines. In addition, Netflix also gives viewers the opportunity to begin watching shows which they had initially not picked up on. This way, it makes it easy for viewers to catch up to the present season if they missed out on previous ones.
Also, Senior Campbell Mattix likes that “Netflix features programs that are not shown in the United States, like Skins UK, and other foreign films.”
Last year, Netflix began streaming their own original television shows, such as House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, which have gained tons of popularity. The way people in the modern century watch television has changed drastically. As technology advances, who knows what may happen in the next couple years.
