The summer of 2014 marked the start of something new for four talented La Cañada High students who decided to form a band. Margaux Alexander (12th), Spencer Wells (11th) , Sean Eckerle (11th) , and Conner Wells (11th) formed a band named “AiRLiNE” and continue to build up their skills and play gigs during the school year.
In AiRLiNE, four members of the band have their respective positions. Margaux, the only senior and female member of the band, is the lead vocal and rhythm guitarist. Spencer is the drummer, Sean the lead guitarist, and Conner the bass guitarist.
What are some words that describe your personality in the band?
Margaux: The stage presence and the social butterfly.
Spencer: The quirky, crazy, deep one.
Sean: The serious, focused one.
Conner: The sensitive, sweet one.
How did you come up with the idea to form a band?
Spencer: Sean and I had been wanting to start a band for a while because the members of my previous band had graduated. Sean had not been in one for a while, so I thought, hey, why not? We then built the band from there.
Were you all close friends before becoming a band?
Margaux: Spencer and I briefly knew each other through Griffin Van Amringe, a 2014 graduate. Our first practice was very weird because, I didn’t know Sean at all, and Conner was the mysterious “twin” brother I had never met! Spencer has known Sean since grade school. Spencer and Conner have known each other since birth.
What kind of songs and genres do you play?
Margaux: We’ve got an alternative/indie rock sound to our music. Almost all of our songs, so far, are originals. Spencer, Conner and I collaborate on the lyrics, while Sean writes the guitar parts. Spencer does his magic on the drums, and I write the melody for the songs.
Which bands do you look up to?
Sean/Conner: We love Cage the Elephant, Bad Suns, Radiohead and The Pixies. They’ve influenced our music and songwriting as well. We like that raw rock sound that builds up and breaks down throughout a song. We try to incorporate that into our music as much as possible.
How did you come up with the name “Airline”?
Margaux: We were all at my house trying to come up with a band name. It literally took us hours. Sean was practically banging his head against the wall. All of the sudden the wall started shaking and he was freaking out and said, “What the… it sounds like an airplane is taking off!!” I shamefully told him that it was my broken washing machine in the other room. He sat up and said…”AiRLiNE!” We are now, forever, AiRLiNE, thanks to my laundry.
What is your ultimate goal, as a band?
Spencer: We are aiming for the stars! We want to professionally record some demos and maybe even come out with an EP. We also want to build a following! That means you, who ever you are, reading the paper. Yeah, you!
What should we expect from your upcoming gigs?
Conner: We are planning to play at some local venues such as The Whiskey or even The Roxy (TBA)! We’ll have some brand new originals for you guys as well. Also, we are going to be participating in Battle of the Bands. We’ve been practicing a ton, and can’t wait to perform for you guys!
